About BIBS
-
In 1987 a small group of concerned Detroiters approached the Recreation Department about restoring the overgrown lily pond garden between the Aquarium and the Conservatory. After approval of this project the Belle Isle Botanical Society, BIBS, was founded, members were solicited and volunteers began the restoration. Today there are over sixty named varieties of hosta in addition to various trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals in this area. BIBS' volunteers also work in other gardens around the Conservatory.
BIBS provides a docent program that offers guided tours of the Conservatory. For further information regarding tours, please contact 313-331-7760. This past year BIBS volunteers hosted a Science Lab a variety of school, church and scouting groups. We held classes for nearly 300 children who were delighted by the conservatory and gardens.
BIBS has raised several thousand dollars through various fund raisers and donations. We have been able to purchase plant material, tools and equipment, and have funded repairs to the Conservatory including the ladder, the vents and replacement of glass in the Dome. Our most recent projects was to replace and/or repair nearly 100 panes of glass in the greenhouses and Conservatory.
